Putting People Over Paperwork
The sad irony in contemporary human services delivery systems, particularly those supporting people who experience intellectual and developmental distinctions (IDD), is that many of the systems designed to ensure quality care undermine the relationships, creativity, and human connection that underpin quality. Can Quality Assurance and Improvement processes in today's organizational environment put people over paperwork?
We have been desensitized to robotics as caregivers for some time now. From Rosie the faithful companion to the Jetsons, Odi in the TV show Humans, Data from Star Trek, Baymax (Big Hero 6), and of course R2D2 and C3PO (do I have to name the movie franchise?). The examples are not too far from reality.
